Mcfly- Love Is On The Radio
McFly - Love is on the Radio
This music video is a concept music video more than a narrative, and has elements of performance in it too. The basic theme of this video is joy and fun, featuring the band smiling and doing different activities.
The camera work in this video is all one shot, this wide angle shows a large area in which the band do activities. It is used so you can see everything that is going on in the video at the same time without the camera having to cut between shots and miss things. I really like this effect as it is the band and people in the shot who have to move toward the camera to get a close up on them without the camera moving.
As you can see the camera being in one place means it can pick up things in the background and foreground easily without moving. The first shot shows the boys roller skating and having fun, this is stereotypical as boys are usually seen as fairly childish and silly. The second shot shows them being more serious when playing their instruments which suggests they take their work very seriously. The second shot also shows that the music video has elements of performance in it, with them playing the songs on their instruments.
The lighting of the video is very bright and the background is also a very bright blue, this connotes happiness and joy.
The first shot is an example of the bright and colourful background. This connotes happiness and the silly faces also creates joy. The second shot shows the boys covered in paint and confetti, this also gives off happiness to the audience as it makes them feel like they are having fun with the band. This shot is stereotypical of men in bands as it shows them as being funny, silly and childish, that makes for a more fun music video.
The editing in this video is unlike majority of other music videos as it isn't edited to the beat of the song. This would usually be an issue to the look of the video since it can look very strange when there is no order to the editing. However, the way this video is edited fits in with the whole idea of fun and happiness as there is no order in the video so no order in the editing either.
I really like this music video because not only is it a catchy song, but the video itself is very fun and enjoyable to watch which makes me want to listen to the song more. The simplistic camera work used in this video is something I really like the idea of because it makes for a very consistent video in the way that it looks.

One Direction - Drag Me Down
Drag me down is a concept music video with elements of performance. It features NASA space station and the 1D boys preparing for liftoff into space. It also has a lot of shots of them lip syncing the words to give it the performance look.
A lot of wide angle shots are used in the video, this emphasises just how big the place is that they are and shows how magnificent it is.
The first shot shows the boys all suited up and ready to go into space, the framing of it suggests that they are very important and cool since they are centre of the shot. It is stereotypical of men to be made out to be cool, powerful and brave, it makes the audience look up to them and admire them.
The second shot just shows how big the place is and emphasises that the band must be very important to be able to shoot a music video in NASA, it is very impressive.
Throughout the music video, the editing is cut to the beat which gives the video a good aesthetic and order. On the build up to the chorus, the editing speeds up tremendously and turns very fast paced to keep up with the drums.
The clothing in the video changes between the orange space suits and their regular clothes. The space suits connote bravery and power which is very stereotypical of men. Their regular clothes are casual but they still look stylish and smart, it is stereotypical of men to be smart and stylish so they look cool.
I really like this music video as it doesn't make any sense to the actual song, however it is still a very good, cool music video which makes me want to listen to the song more because I think of the video.
The idea of them being in NASA space station is such a great concept and is very impressive to me that an english band have to popularity to be able to shoot a video there.
Avicii- Nights
Avicii - The Nights
Avicii's 'The Nights' is a video based around the idea of living life to the fullest. You could argue that this video was a combination of concept and narrative, as the video itself is just a compilation of loads of videos shot by someone doing the things they love. However, it also could be a narrative video because it is demonstrating how to live a life you will remember.
The camera work used on this video has a very 'home movie' style to it. This is because the activities he is doing are very active and would be difficult to shoot in a very professional style. It could also suggest that instead of spending so much time on the production of the video, he wanted to grab a camera and go to have more time doing the things he wants to do.
The use of the GoPro makes the video all feel very real and means that we have a lot more close up shots of the man enjoying himself, this makes the audience feel happy.
The POV shots used create the feeling that the audience is actually doing the activities he does which makes us feel a lot more involved and we are almost filled with the adrenaline he is.
The editing throughout the video switches between matching the beat of the song and not. This creates a chaotic, fun feel to the video as it is all mixed and matched.
The song includes the line 'Live a life you will remember'. This is such an inspiring line as it makes the audience want to go out and life a very happy life that is filled with adventure, so when we are old we can look back and remember how amazing our life was.
This is one of my favourite music videos because it fills me with joy and makes me envy the life he has. It also makes me want to go out and do all the things he is doing.
Ed Sheeran- Photograph

I feel like this music video is a mixture between narrative and concept. The whole thing is loads of home movies all edited together showing Ed growing up and learning new instruments etc. Throughout it we see Ed growing up right from a baby and slowly learning new things like guitar, piano and drums. These are then cut with present day clips, this shows the similarities of what he is now and what he was then.
The editing is very simplistic in this video, this may be because they wanted to make it look more real and not distract the audience with flashy editing and have them concentrate more on the concept behind the video. There is no lip syncing in the video which doesn't effect the video because it is a concept video and not a performance video. Each clip shown has its original audio still playing in the background, this gives it more of a real feel and actually feels like we are watching home movies. At the end of the video we hear Ed's dad say to a very young Ed 'You at the top of the mountain?' as we see little Ed climbing up a hill. It then cuts to show Ed Sheeran on stage in front of thousands of people. This is suggesting that Ed has now, figuratively, made it to the top of the mountain by being able to play in front of this many people.
Mcfly's-different music video styles
Performance
A performance music video is a video that shows the artist performing their song. It can sometimes have the occasional clip of something else between the performance but is mainly performance.
This video shows McFly performing the song 'Shine a Light'. It also has some clips of different things but the main body of the music video is them playing and singing the song.
Narrative
A narrative music video is one that tells the story of the song through visuals. It will link to the lyrics and show the audience what the song is about.
McFly's "That Girl" music video shows the boys working in a petrol station when a girl shows up. The song is about how they tried to get her and eventually do but then she shows up with a different guy. The video shows this.
Concept
A concept music video is one that has nothing to do with the song. It is made to confuse or entertain the audience so they have no idea why the video is what it is, but like it anyway. McFly's music video for 'Room on the Third Floor' is a concept video because the video doesn't link to the lyrics at all.
Basic Outline For Final Idea
The first part of our film is going to be shots of people walking and travelling around in places like London etc.
Then we are planning to change it to skiing shots after the fast drum beat when it says 'He said one day' at 36 seconds.
Where it says 'My father told me' at 51 seconds, we want there to be some sort of fade in to the paddle boarding and lake footage.
At 1:07 where the music becomes fast paced, we are planning to have fast paced editing of lots of shots of falling in the water.
The start of the second verse, we want to change settings again so are going to use footage from Charlie's Florida holiday. This will then take us to the Chorus.
We have been told we are allowed 10% of our film to be the original video so we want to use the part where he is lip syncing as we don't have any lip syncing of our own.
After this we think we will have a mixture of all of our footage to fill out the rest of the song, mixing the paddle boarding with the skiing etc.

Production schedule
After emailing Leigh Foster, an explorer leader who runs water activities at Lackford lakes, we have managed to gain access to the lake from 1-4 on the Wednesday of Half Term (28th). We are only allowed access to the lake when he is there so we would have to arrange another day to film if we needed it.
This is the email I received after asking Leigh if we could use the lake, and him saying he would check with the owners.
We would all meet in one place with enough time to get to Lackford by 1 o'clock.
This time slot is very short so could be a struggle to get everything filmed however, all we need to film is the shots of the lake when we are there and possibly the changing room parts. But if we need to we can always stage the parts where we change to our clothes somewhere else and pretend its the same day.
